Weekly Vocabulary Words

Vocabulary List for the Week of January 11th

These words will be taken for a quiz grade in both Social Studies AND Reading. Please study these vocabulary cards at home and send them back to school so they can be practiced here as well. The quiz will take place on Friday, January 15th


  1. appoint: to choose someone for a job (the person is chosen by the person or people who are in charge)


  1. elect: to choose someone for a job by having citizens vote


  1. administrator: the person who is appointed to be in charge of or manage something


  1. common welfare: something that belongs to and benefits (is good for) all citizens


  1. public works: structures such as roads, dams, bridges that are paid for and taken care of by the government


  1. planning & zoning: deciding how to use land in an area - deciding where roads, buildings and other structures should be placed


  1. rural area: a farming or forest area


  1. urban area: a big city


  1. suburbs: communities/neighborhoods close to a city

  1. recount: (verb) to retell in detail


  1. summarize: (verb) to retell a story but with only the main idea and the most important events


  1. literature: (noun) fictional writing - includes stories, poems and plays


  1. folktale: (noun) a traditional story that is passed down from generation to generation and includes something fantastic or magical


  1. fantastic: (adjective) describes something that could not happen in real life


  1. fable: (noun) a specific type of folktale - a short story that teaches a useful lesson called a moral, and has animals who speak and act like humans


  1. moral: (noun) a lesson that people can learn from a story or from an experience that might help them make smart choices in the future


  1. myth: (noun) an old story that has been handed down through time that tells about gods and heroes, or explains events in nature
