Howard is a contemporary Australian artist and Arts educator from Cairns. Her Surrealist work starts with an idea and is transformed into paintings using bold contrast of light and dark and complementary colours of blue and orange. Read through this document on her design process when creating compositions.
special thanks to Lenore for sharing her work and processes with usThis unit has introduced you to the Surrealist art movement. Your task in this project is to apply the visual representation of a surrealist ideals in an artwork. It cannot just be a mish-mash of haphazard elements. You must show an understanding of surrealism elements: symbolism, the bizarre, juxtaposition, metaphor ... .
You will start your scape painting by creating a collage with the provided images and translate this into a painting using your chosen style.
When creating your collage, refer to Howard's use of juxtaposition, repetition, size and contrast. You can add your own elements into the work, but it starts with provided source imagery.
