Coach Guernsey came to Howell in 2016 after coaching at Canton and Plymouth High Schools for nine seasons. Coach Guernsey competed in college at Michigan State and Eastern Michigan, representing the Eagles at the MAC Championships in 2006. During his tenure the High School team has amassed 189 dual meet wins, an average of over 20 per year. Six Highlanders have earned all state honors, including three MHSAA finalists.
Coach Calandrino graduated from the Howell wrestling program in 2012 as one of the most decorated athletes in school history. He holds the school record for career wins with 204, as well as being a 4 time state placer including a State Championship in 2012. He wrestled for Eastern Michigan University. Coach Calandrino will be serving as the varsity assisstant coach.
Coach Mac is the longest serving active Howell coach, and a Howell graduate (Class of '03). After graduating from Grand Valley State University, where he played rugby, he has been helping the Highlander Wrestling program at all levels since 2009. Coach Mac was a three year varsity letterman in high school and currently works mostly with the Varsity B and JV teams.
Coach Perkins has been a regular contributor to the Howell program for the past decade, initially working with the Hurricanes before helping at the high school program for the past 7 seasons, while his sons Ryan and Dylan were on the team. Coach Perkins primarily helps with the varsity team.
Coach Hartmann wrestled from 8th-12th grade at Saline Middle/High School. By his senior year, he was one of the captains of the team, and was an all conference wrestler. Throughout his wrestling career, he has experienced what it is like to be the worst wrestler in the room, but also to know that with hardwork and dedication, you will improve and be able to achieve things you didn’t know you could do. Coach Hartmann will primarily be coaching the Girls Team this year.
A Howell class of '93 graduate, Coach Newstead remembers when the wrestling room was half the size and twice the temperature. Helping out with the Varsity, JV and Girl Wrestlers, Coach Newstead provides a passionate and steady coaching and advice to Howell wrestlers of all skill levels. Coach Newstead has been helping with all levels of the program for 12 years, his youngest son Ryker will be third of his children to pass through the program as Taylor was a manager until she graduated in 2020, and Zach graduated in 2022.
