Set up your laptop/computer or download the Zoom app on your phone and try to put yourself in a relatively quiet space.
Make sure you have digital access to your paper and the assignment prompt - you will be asked to share your screen or send the file on Zoom so the tutor can see these documents.
Go to Zoom.us, click on "Join a Meeting", then enter the appropriate Zoom meeting ID # (based on day and time - see schedule below).
Once you enter the Zoom session, the tutor will grant you access or put you in the “waiting room” (if the tutor is already working with another student). The tutor will let you know if the wait is long - if there’s a long wait, you should consider returning for another session at a different time.
Once you are in session with the tutor, you will first need to give your name and your course information (course number and instructor) in the chat function in Zoom. You will need to also share your documents - the assignment prompt and your paper - with the tutor.
If you are not comfortable with using video, you can just use audio. You can also use the chat function to communicate with the tutor.
Your time with the tutor will not exceed 30 minutes. This will allow the tutor to help other students.
The tutor will discuss with you what it is you need help with.
The tutor cannot go over the whole essay or edit your paper for you. You will need to identify the areas you want to work on (see list below) and focus on those.
Introduction and/or conclusion
Thesis
Grammar and mechanics
Idea development
Research and documentation
Integrating sources
Organization
Addressing the assignment prompt
Reading assignment
In all tutoring sessions, the student writer is the one doing the writing, not the tutor. The tutor can show and demonstrate different strategies and suggestions but you are the one doing the writing on the document.
In all tutoring sessions, but particularly in an online environment, it is important to exercise good listening.
Please thank your tutor!
Be sure to click on “Leave Meeting”.
If you have feedback about your online tutoring session that you want to share with the center, please send a message to complitcenter@howardcc.edu.
