As an adjunct professor of science methods course at the University of Houston-Downtown, a part of my duties this spring semester is to prepare elementary preservice teachers to take TExES science competency exam. Also, I review their 7E lesson plans and assess their content knowledge during lesson delivery. The exam spans through most fields of science, and the same is true with the lesson plan I review. I can teach physics and chemistry contents to the teacher candidates with confidence, but not Earth and Space Science. I have limited content knowledge of Earth and Space science, given that I never focused on learning the contents of this branch of science because I found it unnecessary. Presented with the challenge, I aggressively began teaching myself. I learned Plate Tectonic through video and PhET simulation and the Phases of the Moon through video one and video two.
