Texas has adopted curriculum standards that are to be used in all the state's public schools. The current standards, which outline what students are to learn in each course or grade, are called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The standards are adopted by the State Board of Education, after extensive input from educators and other stakeholders.
In World Cultures, we will explore the regions of the world through the "lens" os ESPN: Economic, Social, Political, & Natural Environment. Lanier's diverse and multicultural student body is a springboard from which to start our exploration of the world. ESPN will be used throughout the year to introduce people & places of the following regions. Southwest Asia, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South & Southeast Asia, Europe, Russia, the Americas, Oceania, and Antarctica.
World Cultures which encompases a variety of subjects relating to people and the world around them. The class is an introductory course exploring people and their cultures through analytical skills focusing on the following:
Reading, analyzing, & creating maps
Interpreting reading, and inference of charts and graphs
classifying sources as primary and/or secondary
problem solving and decision making
As a class, the developing learner will explore the following concepts: location, adaptation to the environment, migration, trade routes, government and economic systems, history and elements of culture such as religion. Students are able to classify and analyze information abd become aware of how humans interact with their environment and what an impact their environment has on their development.
