Welcome to Lanier Math Department!

School Year 2024 - 2025

Dearest Lanier families,

We are so glad to welcome you to Lanier Math Department! We are excited and optimistic about starting the 2024 - 2025 school year.  Lanier is a very special educational institution. As we start this school year, please understand that we are here to support and ensure that your student feels welcome, supported, and connected to Math Department and the Lanier community.

This year, our team is piloting a direct alignment to the Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry components of AP Calculus, which we hope all of our students will take in just a few short years. We are committed to ensuring students receive a meaningful, deep learning experience that prepares them to think critically and enables their success in high school mathematics and beyond.

In addition, we start turning our part of a Math Department bulletin board over to a Weekly Math Challenge. Our goal is to motivate students to learn math and help improve their critical thinking skills. We post a new challenge math puzzle on Mondays and give students a week to solve the challenge.

They visit the Math Department bulletin board to earn rewards for solving math challenges. If it appears that a particular Math Challenge is giving students a hard time after a week, we will offer an additional clue to help out. Parents are requested to encourage students to take on this challenge.

We have also been supporting the Lanier Math Club, a forum where Purple PUP math lovers are experiencing the beauty of mathematical ideas, exploring challenging math problems, and discussing types of systematic approaches to problem-solving to prepare for mathematics competitions through weekly challenging problems. Last year, we helped Lanier Math Team obtain great achievements for outstanding performance on the AMC and University of Houston Math Contests.

We understand this year will likely look very different from what any of us anticipated. Student achievement is our top priority; so to assist in your child’s academic success, we ask for the following two things:

We believe cooperation between teachers, students, and families is necessary to ensure the rigorous, meaningful academic experience we wish to create to bring success to your child.  We will not be standing beside our students’ sides to enforce our rules, but we ask that you still adhere to the high expectations outlined in the syllabus. That said, attend class promptly, take thorough notes, ensure your work is yours and yours alone (unless otherwise stated), and limit distractions. Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry are crucial components of the SAT, ACT, and more advanced math courses such as calculus and beyond. We are committed to ensuring every student has access to a high-quality learning experience at Lanier.

With our excited and highly-energetic students, we are all looking forward to a successful school year!
