In order to prepare Houston’s students for a world beyond the four walls of a classroom, HISD has launched PowerUp, a districtwide initiative aimed at transforming teaching and learning. PowerUp is about “powering up” our schools by creating a personalized learning environment for today’s 21st-century learners and to enable teachers to more effectively facilitate instruction, manage curriculum, collaborate with their peers, and engage today’s digitally wired students. The comprehensive initiative that has three main drivers.
The importance of Digital Safety promotes responsible use of digital devices. Parents and guardians are encouraged to model positive behavior, routinely monitor students' use, and hold students accountable for behaviors at home.
For students to receive a Chromebook, parents or guardians must complete this Digital Safety Course, confirm completion on the Google form linked, return the required paperwork to their campus, and submit the non-refundable $25.00 Device Fee.
Hogg Middle School is a HISD Power Up 1:1 campus that provides access to Chromebooks for on and off campus use in addition to desktop computers and other technology equipment. In order for students to use HISD devices and accounts (both on and off campus), we require all students to comply with our technology policies.
Students and staff must have equitable access to the latest technology, tools, infrastructure, and cyber safety guidelines to support digital-age instruction, collaboration, and the development of 21st-century skills. Part of this effort includes the district’s one-to-one laptop program, which will provide every high school student with a laptop to use for learning at school.
Digital teaching and learning platforms are for collaboration, curriculum, instruction, and communication for HISD staff, students, and parents. This will allow all HISD educators to create and share instructional resources and assignments, enable students to tailor their classes to their own personal learning profile, and allow parents to track their children’s progress.
The one-size-fits-all classroom approach that worked well in the industrial era, when children were trained to perform repetitive tasks efficiently, no longer prepares students for success. Colleges and employers now want innovative, creative thinkers who can solve problems and apply their knowledge to new challenges. In order to create these types of students, educators at HISD must work to personalize learning for each child’s unique needs, abilities, and preferences.
