SAN BRUNO – YouTube this week confirmed reports that a 14-year-old Marin County girl has been booted from the video-sharing platform for violating community guidelines on hate speech.

The user known as “Soph” made waves with a string of controversial videos, the most recent of which espoused anti-LGBTQ views and urged her nearly 1 million followers to “make sure to blame me in your manifestos,” according to BuzzFeed News.

The manifesto remark was a direct reference to the sort of screed uploaded to the website 8chan by the shooter who killed 51 in Christchurch, New Zealand, BuzzFeed News reported. The shooter who killed 22 in El Paso, Texas, over the weekend posted a similar document.

San Bruno-based YouTube said Soph also violated its so-called strikes system. Channels that rack up three strikes within the same 90-day period are permanently removed.

In a since-deleted tweet, Soph posted an image of herself with what appears to be an assault rifle with the chilling caption “youtube headquarters here I come,” according to BuzzFeed News. “Gun tweet obviosly [sic] a joke,” she wrote in a follow-up tweet.

In an email, Tiburon police Chief Michael Cronin said his department investigates all public safety matters reported within its jurisdiction, but he said he could not release any information on cases involving juveniles.

“Let me add that in any situation, if we determined a threat to be credible we would take steps to mitigate the risk and notify potential victims through their local law enforcement agencies,” Cronin said.

The San Bruno Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

YouTube has been targeted by angry users in the past. On April 3, 2018, 38-year-old Nasim Najafi Aghdam shot three people at its headquarters before turning her gun on herself. Authorities pointed to Aghdam’s displeasure with YouTube’s business practices as a motive.

In May, Soph allegedly threatened YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki after the site removed a video in which she wears a hijab and espouses anti-Muslim views, according to BuzzFeed News. KRON4 News said in a report that North Bay authorities did not find the threat credible because she did not have access to weapons at the time.
