Religious Leader. A noted Presbyterian theologian, professor, and co-founder of the American Theological Society, he headed the Auburn Theological Seminary, one of the nation's foremost divinity schools. An advocate of ecumenism among other religious views considered "liberal", he opposed the literal interpretation of the Bible, a hot button issue in the era of the Scopes "Monkey Trial". He is additionally notable as the patriarch of a distinguished American family. The father of the renowned Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, "spymaster" and CIA Director Allen W. Dulles, and the diplomat Eleanor Dulles, he is also the grandfather of Avery, Cardinal Dulles, S.J., the first American theologian to be named a Prince of the Catholic church.
