Elizabeth's Bridal Wear was established in 1991 and has helped thousands of brides find their dream dress over the years. Elizabeth remembers her very first bride, and even has old photos and thank you notes, which she used to pin on the wall in the dining room at home (before the days of Google and Facebook!) Many previous brides now come to the shop with daughters who are going to their school prom or getting married. She says this makes her feel very old, however, to have survived the tough retail climate and the emergence of brides buying dresses over the internet is certainly an accomplishment, especially when so many larger shops and national chains have closed down.
Having run the business at home for many years, Elizabeth soon learnt that she needed to move into larger premises, so moved to The Parade Shopping Centre. They operated from a small unit and it was during the time when girls started looking for prom dresses and on a Saturday the shop would have brides and prom girls waiting to come in. With just one small changing room, this became quite a challenge! As the bridal, prom and evening wear trade began to flourish, Elizabeth and her husband Terry realised that they would need to re-locate once again. They moved to 106-107 Frankwell and now have enough space for a bridal room and bridesmaid room, and of course enough space for customers to sit down. The prom side of things is no longer as popular as girls often buy their dress online. Elizabeth is a great believer in supporting local businesses and has always purchased furniture and decorative items for the shop from local independent shops.
The shop has undergone a great deal of improvements over the years, although it was a beautiful listed Tudor building it needed some TLC. They have had to deal with two floods and a ceiling caving in (twice) from the flat above, during one of their busiest times of the year!
One of Elizabeth's passions is to provide every bride with a unique experience. Every bride deserves to look beautiful and whether you are a size 4 or 34, you can be sure that we will try our best to find a dress you truly love. Frankwell is a beautiful part of the town, with parking close by and lots of cafes and restaurants within walking distance.
Elizabeth and Terry look forward to meeting you.
