Tikanga in Performing Arts

In the wise words of Aretha Franklin... RESPECT!!!

Generally speaking, tikanga are Māori customary practices or behaviours. The concept is derived from the Māori word 'tika' which means 'right' or 'correct' so, in Māori terms, to act in accordance with tikanga is to behave in a way that is culturally proper or appropriate.

In Performing Arts Tikanga depends on our relationships with the students and each other.

What does Tikanga look like?

  • Respecting instruments

  • Respecting spaces

  • Returning instruments to their storage places ( not leaving guitars lying around on the floor )

  • Keeping practise rooms tidy

  • Performing proudly

  • Encouraging other performers

  • Using instruments and practise spaces at break times

  • Respecting each other, students, teachers.

  • Being kind to each other

  • No eating
