Using a Bunsen Burner

Aim: To demonstrate how to heat a liquid inside a test tube.

Safely using a Bunsen Burner

Equipment: 

Bunsen Burner

Heatproof mat

Lighter

Boiling tube

Test tube tongs 

Safety glasses

Method:

1. Light the Bunsen Burner.

2. Fill your boiling tube to approximately 25ml water.

3. Turn the collar at the bunsen so it is a blue flame.

4. Holding the boiling tube with test tube tongs,tilt the boiling tube on a 45 degree angle and place the bottom of the test tube into the flameEnsure that the mouth of the boiling tube is  not pointing towards anyone.

5. Gently wave the test tube in and out of the flame. Rememeber you are trying to heat the liquid gently.

6. Once the water starts to gently bubble, take it away from the flame.Carefully pour the hot water into the sink.
