Some bacteria are harmful, but most serve a useful purpose. They support many forms of life, both plant and animal, and they are used in industrial and medicinal processes.
Bacteria are thought to have been the first organisms to appear on earth, about 4 billion years ago. The oldest known fossils are of bacteria-like organisms.
When bacteria reproduce the kids are exactly the same as their mum.
Bacteria can use most organic and some inorganic compounds as food, and some can survive extreme conditions.
There are many different types of bacteria. One way of classifying them is by shape. There are three basic shapes.
Bacteria feed in different ways.
Bacteria can be found in soil, water, plants, animals, radioactive waste, deep in the earth’s crust, arctic ice and glaciers, and hot springs. There are bacteria in the stratosphere, between 6 and 30 miles up in the atmosphere, and in the ocean depths, down to 32,800 feet or 10,000 meters deep.
Bacteria are often thought of as bad, but many are helpful. We would not exist without them. The oxygen we breathe was probably created by the activity of bacteria.
Agar dish
Cotton bud swab
Vivid pen
Divide the agar in half by drawing a line on the underneath of the lid.
Collect the bacteria on a cotton bud swab from taps, computer keyboards or desks.
Wipe the swab onto the agar solution carefully making sure you do not damage the agar..
Put the petri dish into the incubator for 1 week to allow the bacteria to grow.
Look at the bacteria under the microscope.
Collect the bacteria but first you must divide your petri dish in 4 and label each part 1,2,3,4.
On your blog write numbers 1-4 down the page. Beside each one you need to write where you collected the sample from.
Take a 3 photos of your experiement. The photo needs to be taken on your chromebook camera and uploaded to your site.
1 photo at the start, 1 of collecting your samples and 1 at the end.
The bacteria were placed in an incubator for 5 days and kept at a temperature of 21 degrees. Over this time the bacteria fed on the agar solution that is made up of sugar and minerals. The agar is also a moist texture so the bacteria had a perfet growing environement with darkness, moisture and food.
Draw a chart that is 5 across and 4 down.
Across will be the 5 bacteria charateristics. Down will be the 4 bacteria sample places.
On your chart you are going to observe the bacteria you have grown and record what you have found.
On your chart you will have the following headings.
Shape - Round, Rod, Coiled
Colour - White, Orange, yellow, black
Texture - Moist, Dry
Surface - smooth, rough shiny, dull, or wrinkled.
Opacity - Translucent – clear, Opaque – not clear, Iridescent – shiny
Write a summary of your findings.
Find 4 pictures like the bacteria in your agar dish. See if you can find out what it is called.
eg. The bacteria on the tap was round in shape. Its texture was shiny. The surface of the bacteria was smooth and the opacity was not clear. The bacteria was orange in colour.
Take a photo of your bacteria and upload it to your blog.
