As people go through their life, their jobs, and their interests, there will be times when questions arise and to have an informed understanding, data is often collected and explored, statistical investigations are carried out, analysis is done, and conclusions are formed which may include inferences or predictions.
At NCEA Level 1, you will explore a topic, forming an individual purpose and then collecting (or sourcing) a range of data and variables which they will then explore and carry out an investigation.
SURVEY
The process of collecting data from people in the population using a questionnaire.
POLL
Asking people in the population ONE question where they give their opinion.
Observational
People or objects are observed without altering or controlling their behaviour in any way.
Experimental
The investigator applies a treatment to participants.
Numerical Data - described by numbers e.g. height, age, weight
Continuous Data - obtained by measuring.
Discrete Data - obtained by counting.
Categorical Data - cannot be described by numbers. The data will be in groups of words e.g. gender, ethnicity, apple variety.
Nominal Data - categorical data where the categories have
NO order e.g. black, blonde, brown, grey, etc.
Ordinal Data - categorical data where the categories have
HAVE order e.g. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc
