In this standard we will learn about what fungi are, how they live, and how their environment affects them.
We will use this information to complete an investigation around where it is best to store bread: fridge/freezer, cupboard or near somewhere warm.
You have 3 weeks of class time to complete the Internal.
It is worth 4 credits
What is the relevance to me?
"Germs" can spread and get onto food.
Food spoilage.
Washing hands is important for hygiene.
What happen if you eat mould?
What is mould?
What is the structure of mould?
How does mould reproduce?
How does mould get its food?
YOUTUBE PLAYLIST:
This is a play list of videos to help you understand the structures, functions and life processes of fungi.Carry out an investigation on the affect of temperature for growing mould
Research what mould is: it's structures, functions and life processes
Determine which condition is best to store bread, and explain why.
Follow your method to collect data and record the results on the slides provided
Remember to record any changes to your method and reasons for the changes as you go.
Record any difficulties with equipment, gathering your data or your method.
Once you have collected data over approximately two weeks, you need to sort out all the information so its more easily understood - hopefully you'll see something (trend/pattern).....
Interpret the data
Record the relevant trend or pattern; this is your interpretation.
Relate the trend or pattern to your purpose; this is your conclusion.
Conclusion
A conclusion that links your interpretation to the purpose of the investigation that explains the trend. What did your experiment show/tell you about temperature and mould growth
Use the in class learning and your research to find out the following things about Fungi (bread moulds are a type of fungi), add to your slides.
What is mould/fungi?
Structures and Functions of fungi
What makes them living?
How do they grow?
How do they feed?
How are fungi affected by temperature?
We will be looking at how you have researched to find information.
Make sure you add a link to the sites you found it on, and you use many different sources (at least 3) and you have tried to use reliable sources.
(this its the really important stuff)
Discussion:
An answer to the question "Where do I store my bread?"
A justification of your answer linking to evidence from your experiment (why??)
Linking in your research findings:
What are the structures and their functions of fungus, link to life processes and environmental factors.
two life processes (growth and nutrition)
what was the environmental factor and how did it affect the life processes
