A note about developmental growth...

Children grow and develop as they are ready. We can neither force, nor rush the process. If one child is "further" along in terms of what they can do, we know that either they are not ready yet or they haven't had the motivation or experiences that will help to promote that development. Development through play is the best way to promote growth in young children. Parents should use discretion in determining and limiting the amount of screen time children spend in their day. Horizon School Division is not promoting screen time as the primary source of learning and developing for our youngest learners.

Because limiting screentime for young children is recommended, here are some things you can do to support developmental growth without the internet. (this title will link you to the research, click on the down arrow for non-screentime ideas.)

Careful monitoring and instructing of children as to what they should be clicking and should not is an important consideration when children are accessing online tools.

This would be a great conversation to have around why companies would put "pop-ups" on sites or put advertising for parents on sites for kids.

Math and Number Sense

Many Sites offer free sign ups. We are not suggesting that you do this as the sites listed here do not require a sign up to access their interactive games. Be wary of free sign ups that ask for a credit card - this usually means that after a time period (say, 30 days), your credit card will be charged for membership.
