Living by our Christian Values: Together in Faith, Hope and Love

Friday 20th January 2023

Horbury Bridge CE J&I Academy

The weather may have been chilly this week, but the learning has been on fire…quite literally in Class 1. In Forest School, Class 1 were learning about fire safety and how fires are started using a flint. They showed great determination under the watchful eyes of Mrs Stearne and were delighted when their fire sparked into life!

In keeping with the fire theme, Class 3 have been learning all about The Blitz in WWII. They used photographic evidence and maps to work out why certain cities were targeted and the damage each suffered at the hands of the Luftwaffe.

Class 2 took to warmer climates as they continued their Geographical study of the Mediterranean, looking at the difference in climate between Greece and the United Kingdom.

In Foundation stage, pupils have been learning about colour and in particular how different colours are mixed. They have used their new knowledge to create artwork to celebrate Chinese New Year - the year of the Rabbit!

Many thanks for your response to my plea about parking. I have received many messages of support on this issue. While it will always be something that will be difficult to manage within our community, the safety of our pupils must be a priority. On that note, as you will have seen, gas works are currently being carried out on the school drive. Whilst the drive should not be used for drop off at any time, this is particularly true with this additional hazard in place. It is not worth the risk just to save a few seconds!

As always, I hope you have a lovely weekend during this cold snap…looks like we’re back to double digits next week!

Best wishes

Safeguarding

Online Safety

As we approach Safer Internet Day in February, please see below for some useful advice on how to support your child/ren when online.

Online Safety with Google

As part of Google Families, Google has a hub of resources that you can use including conversation starters with links to additional tools and advice and information about parental controls. Google also provide you with resources to help your children build healthier habits and stay safe online. There is also a selection of ideas on how to use technology as a family in a fun and engaging manner such as exploring the world and learning how to code.

You can access the hub here:

https://families.google/intl/en_uk/

Being Kind Online

It can be very easy online for children to behave in a way that they wouldn’t if they were face to face with each other. Talk to your child about how they are speaking to others online and encourage them to talk to people online with respect and kindness, like they would if they were face-to-face. Dr Linda Papadopoulos (Internet Matters Ambassador) provides tips on how you can help your child to be kind online in this YouTube video such as teaching them how to be inclusive and think about how they would like to be treated online themselves:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BqKi3J7g6Q&t=9s

Ensure that your child understands that if they receive unkind messages (or see something that worries them) then they should not reply or engage in conversation with them, but that they should tell a trusted adult. You can use the tools within an app to report any offensive or hurtful content as well as block people so they cannot contact you again in the future.

UNICEF have a comprehensive area on their website, that talks about what Cyberbullying is and how to stop it:
