Living by our Christian Values: Together in Faith, Hope and Love

20th November: Newsletter 10

Remembrance Reflections

Katherine, the Children and Families Worker at church, has worked with the children to explore different aspects of Remembrance and their links to Christianity. The children made shields to help them reflect on bravery, voted for things they would be prepared to give up (sacrifice) to help others, planted paper poppies and wrote the names of people and things special to each of them, on a 'remembrance tree'. Finally, they reflected on the future by writing and drawing their hopes and wishes.

Young Leaders: Pass the Recipe Cookathon

Christmas

Christmas Jumper Recycle

On our final day of term, children will be having class based celebrations and will be able to wear Christmas jumpers to add to the festive feeling.

The Young Leaders will be coordinating a recycling project for all your outgrown Christmas Jumpers. Please dig out your children's jumpers and if they no longer fit, pop them into the crates at the gates during the morning drop off between Monday 23rd November and Tuesday 1st December.

The Young Leaders will then quarantine, sort sizes, photograph and wrap the jumpers ready for re-sale. The photos will be put on the 'Horbury Bridge Academy Parents And Friends Association' Facebook site for you to shop. Simply be the first to comment next to the photo and pay £3 online which will go towards our fundraising. Your purchase will then be sent home with your child by Wednesday 9th December, ready for wearing on the last day of term.

Let's send a pinecone to Geoffrey on the Moon.mp4

Nursery also explored how to send a pinecone to Geoffrey on the moon. They tried out ways to launch the pinecone as high as possible, using a simple lever and as much force as they could!

We would like to say thank you to all of our families for making our morning routine run so smoothly. The next stage of your child's learning will be for them to become more independent at managing their own care needs.

The new physical development aspect (fine motor strand) of the Early Years curriculum which we are trialling this year, states that 3-4 yr old children should be working to: "Be increasingly independent as they get dressed and undressed, for example, putting coats on and doing up zips." This is a target that all of Nursery are working towards this half term. Please help us us with this on a morning by encouraging your child to unfasten and take off their coat themselves. There is always a member of staff in the classroom who will support them if needed. Thank you.

Class 1

Class 1 have been very busy this week developing their design and modelling skills. We looked closely at different landmarks in London and chose which one we would like to make. Carefully, we designed it, thinking about the materials we might need. They are a work in progress but we’re very proud of our work.

As Diwali was celebrated earlier this week, we discussed what we already knew about the festival and activities we remembered from Foundation. We looked closely at Rangoli patterns, observing shapes and lines of symmetry then designed our own.

Class 2

Class 2 have been thinking about kindness this week. The children have been exploring how different people are in the world and that difference is a good thing. They thought that it was really important to celebrate difference and that everyone is unique in their own way! they created a poster about how amazing they are and what makes them special.

Year 3 had a great time in Forest School this week. They were set the challenge to build a shelter with a limited amount of resources. They worked as a team to arrive at their desired shelter design.

Class 3

In PE, we are focusing on Unihoc. This week, the children have been developing their ball control and passing skills with Coach Rich!

In science, the children have been identifying reversible and irreversible reactions. Working in groups, they discussed their thoughts and opinions - the children attending live lessons from home, were even able to join in the fun!

We have also been learning more about the life of Rose Blanch; a little German girl who, in our story, smuggled food to prisoners in a concentration camp. The children decided that a wall in our classroom should be made into a memorial, honoring her life and they have written persuasive letters to Mrs Skinner asking for permission. Luckily, she said yes!
