Living by our Christian Values: Together in Faith, Hope and Love

5th March: Newsletter 18

Welcome back!

It has been a wonderful week with everyone back in school together. There were lots of smiling faces on Monday - from staff and parents as well as the children! We have loved seeing all the children again and everyone has settled back well into routines. They are so resilient and positive in their attitudes. We have had fun activities throughout school linked to both Science Week and World Book Day, including a delicious book themed lunch. We are looking forward to a well earned rest at the weekend now!

Name Labels

As the weather gets warmer, children like to take their jumpers off at playtimes to cool down. This can cause problems sorting out afterwards as the PE kit is difficult to label up and we find many have no name label or are written names are faded.

To help with this, we are providing each child with 2 simple to iron on labels. Your child will have brought home a green envelope today with 2 name labels. Oldest siblings will bring home the labels for all the family.

Instructions on how to use these can be found here: Instructions

If you would like to order any more of these labels please contact the office for prices and delivery times.

Crigglestone Rugby Club

Crigglestone Rugby are now recruiting players aged 3 to 14. Please see the flyer for more details.

Parking

Our road safety officer, Chris, visited this week and will be returning on Thursday 18th March to continue to monitor parking and liaise with parents to help ease the difficulties at drop off and pick up time. The parking promise was sent out this week via email and highlighted some of the main ways of helping keep everyone safe, especially during the busier times of the day.

World Poetry Day - Poetry Competition

To celebrate the re-opening of schools to all children, Richard Kendall, our local estate agent, have launched a Children’s Poetry Competition. Children have the opportunity to win an exciting prize for themselves and their school. There are two fantastic prizes of book vouchers to use at the independent book shop Darling Reads in Horbury. Please email your entries to ckendall@richardkendall.co.uk along with the child’s name, age, a parent’s name and contact phone number and the name of the school they attend, before 12 noon on World Poetry Day (Sunday 21st March).

All entries will be judged by our Partners and we will contact the winning child’s school w/c Monday 22nd March. The winner will also be posted on social media later that week, providing we have parental consent.

Class News

Foundation Stage

Our children were delighted to welcome the Gruffalo into our class this week. Mrs Stearne is a good friend of his and invited him into school on Thursday to meet the children. They had lots of questions to ask him such as 'What is your favourite food?' and 'Where is your little child in your book?'. Before he left, the children showed great kindness by giving him gifts from our garden centre to take with him. They also made lots of fantastic puppets and drawings of him using with media and materials.

Class 1

To celebrate World Book Day we have enjoyed the story The Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson. We have made our own paper dolls giving them funny names, thinking carefully about rhyming words and alliteration.

I wonder what kind of adventures they will have?

Class 2

Class 2 have been continuing their roles within the Horbury Bridge Environment Conservation Society.

They decided that they needed to learn how plants grow and what they need in order to survive. They began by carrying out an experiment to see what conditions are the best for a sunflower seed to grow. Some children have taken away water from the seed; some didn't use soil and some put their seeds in a dark place so the seed could not get light. It will be really exciting to see which seed will do the best.

The children then wanted to plant even more things so they all used recycled household items to plant some vegetables that they will be growing in school.

Class 3

Class 3 have been celebrating science week by completing challenges set by different people who use science in their day to day jobs. They have found out about the human body with an ambulance technician, built a telecommunication tower with an engineer, measured rain fall for the Environment Agency and tested rock hardness with a Mexican physical anthropologist!

As well as this, they have delved deeper into the sinking of the Titanic and been shocked at what they have found out
