Welcome to the MD/UD Auditions Page!
We are holding auditions for all MD and UD string, wind, jazz, choral and piano ensembles online. Steel pan auditions will take place in person during the school day in May. Please scroll down for descriptions and audition materials specific to your desired ensemble (band, orchestra, choir, steel pan) or piano class. Generally, we are asking students to complete the following:
Download/print audition materials
Create a video recording of the audition rep and any other audition requirements.
Complete the respective HM Auditions Form and upload your audition video.

UPPER DIVISION STEEL
UD Steelband is a full-year performance elective ensemble open to all Upper Division students, grades 9-12. No audition is required.
UD Steel Orchestra is a more selective course for advanced players. Open to grades 9-12. Live audition is required. Details below.
MIDDLE DIVISION STEEL
Steelpan 7 and Steelpan 8 are arts cycle elective courses. Each course is a semester-long. Enrollment is determined by the Registrar.
MD Steelpan Ensemble is a full-year performance ensemble open to 8th grader students only. Live audition required. Details below.

UPPER DIVISION BANDS
HM Wind Ensemble is open to Upper Division woodwind, brass and percussion players grades 9-12.
HM Chamber Winds is a more selective ensemble for advanced players who also display leadership abilities, grades 9-12.
HM Jazz Ensemble is for students interested in jazz and improvisation. It is open to all instruments, grades 9-12.
MIDDLE DIVISION BANDS
Horizons Ensemble (6th grade) and MD Concert Band (7th & 8th grade) are for woodwind, brass and percussion players only.
There is no MD Ensemble accommodating piano and guitar.
UD BAND AUDITION MATERIALS

UPPER DIVISION ORCHESTRAS
HM Orchestra is open to Upper Division string players, grades 9-12.
HM Sinfonietta is a more selective ensemble for advanced players who display exceptional musical and leadership qualities, grades 9-12.
MIDDLE DIVISION ORCHESTRAS
Chamber Orchestra (6th grade) and HM Strings (7th & 8th grade) are open to string players, grades 6-8.

UPPER DIVISION CHOIRS
HM Glee Club is a large mixed choir of approx. 80 singers, grades 9-12.
Concert Glee Club is a mixed choir of approx. 40-60 advanced singers who display exceptional musical skills, grades 10-12.
Treble Choir is for advanced sopranos and altos who display exceptional musical skills, grades 10-12.
MIDDLE DIVISION CHORUS
Middle Division Chorus is a mixed concert choir of approx. 85 students, grades 6-8.
UD CHOIRS AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
Prepare a video (or multiple videos) with the following:
Clearly state your full name, current school, and which ensemble(s) you are auditioning for in your order of preference.
Sing along to one of the "voicing" recordings found here. Please sing as best you can all the way to the end of the recording. This is only to help us get a sense of your range and therefore to determine if you are a soprano, alto, tenor or bass. Please make sure that we can hear your voice and not the accompaniment in your video recording.
Sing a slow song of your choice a cappella (with no accompaniment), lasting approx. 60 seconds. The song can be from any style or musical tradition.
Sing a fast song of your choice a cappella (with no accompaniment), lasting approx. 60 seconds. The song can be from any style or musical tradition.
Complete the HM Choirs Audition Form. Be sure to upload your audition video(s) before submitting the form.
MD CHORUS AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
Prepare a video (or multiple videos) with the following:
Clearly state your full name and current school.
Sing a slow song of your choice a cappella (with no accompaniment), lasting approx. 30 seconds. The song can be from any style or musical tradition.
Sing a fast song of your choice a cappella (with no accompaniment), lasting approx. 30 seconds. The song can be from any style or musical tradition.
Complete the HM Choirs Audition Form. Be sure to upload your audition video(s) before submitting the form.
Piano Seminar is a 400-level course open to advanced piano students in grades 10-12. Curriculum will first focus on a brief overview of Western classical music, followed by an extensive study of music and styles of the 20th and 21st centuries, including avante-garde, jazz, non-Western music, Broadway, and improvisation.
PIANO SEMINAR AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Prepare a video (or multiple videos) with the following:
Clearly state your full name and current school.
Play 2 major scales of your choosing: in 16th notes, hands together in parallel motion, 4 octaves, at 72 BPM or above.
Play two pieces in contrasting styles with at least one piece coming from the classical repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th/21st Century). A movement from a larger work is acceptable.
