1. Hacksaw Ridge Mel Gibson, November 4, 2016
Is about a man who saved the lives of a reported 75 men without firing a single shot during the battle for Okinawa in WWII. It shows that even though people may think you are weak and can't help doesn't mean it's true; you can prove them wrong.
The main character, Desmond, still went up there to save a lot of people day and night. He was the only one who went up there as bombs were going down. Not only he was saving his people on his side, but he saved enemies as well. That shows even though you are my enemy not all life has to end. He was really brave to do his job even though he could have lost his life.
2. The Cleveland Abduction Alex Kalymnios May 2, 2015
I watched this movie and couldn't stop thinking about it. It brought so many tears to my heart and just watching it was shocking. this movie was so sad and horror. I watch it 5 times because of the horrendous things that he did to them. It's hard to see that you can't trust all of your family's friends. They can be nice and try to get to know you but you never know what their thinking. What hurt them was that he was with her mom on tv hugging her and trying to make her comfortable. It is so easy to fall for lies and later on find out that person ripe and took your child. Even though this movie was sad and hard to watch, people should see it because it teaches young teens to listen to their parents and the film itself is so well made.
3. The Pursuit of Happyness Gabriele Muccino, December 15, 2006
Everyone should watch this movie. This movie is about a father named Chris trying to get a job and help his wife and son to get a better home. Things were going downhill; he lost his wife and she tried to take their son away from him but he did everything in his power to keep his son. Chris Gardner finds success against the odds and tells his son, "You got a dream. You gotta' protect it. People can't do something themselves, they wanna' tell you you can't do it. If you want something, go get it." We can all learn from that because it can inspire us so even when life is going downhill, we an work hard and achieve our dreams.
4. Hidden Figures Theodore Melfi, January 6, 2017
Hidden Figures explores the biographies of three African-American women who worked as computers to solve problems for engineers and others at NASA. I love this movie because they have been told they can't do it but yet prove them wrong. Everyone should learn about these women because even though they didn't have the same rights and respect as white men, they still fought to achieve their goals. For minorities, this tells the powerful message of not letting anyone tell us that we don't deserve equal rights to be who they want to be. For people who may be racist, this movie shows them that we should show everyone respect and equal rights. It benefits everyone in society when we all have opportunities to contribute.
5. Harriet Kasi Lemmons, September 10, 2019
Harriet’s story was masterfully told. She was strong even though her man left her thinking she was dead and was sad. He did not wait. He went to marry another girl. But didn't stop her from doing what she did. She is the best woman I have ever seen. Her escape from slavery through the dangerous missions she led to liberate hundreds of slaves through the Underground Railroad. God is with us we just have to believe it.
6. The Foreigner Martin Campbell, October 13, 2017
This movie is about a father who is seeking revenge for his teenage daughter's death. This film shows us to value our family because you never know how long you'll get to be with them. It also teaches us that revenge doesn't bring back the ones we've lost.
7. Dangal Nitesh Tiwari , 2016
This father, who lived in India was the best wrestler in his county until he retired. He wanted to continue the sport through his son, but he only got daughters. He was losing hope until there was a fight, and he saw how his girls beat up some boys. He realized that he could help his girls be the best wrestlers in his county. Even though there were no female wrestlers in India, he still trained them to practice every day, making them stronger. People should watch this for the message which is that you don't have to follow your culture.
This father was willing to break from the culture for something he knew his daughters would be great at. In my culture, we have a Quinceañera at age 15, but I have chosen to put mine off until I'm 21 because that's when I think I will be mature enough to consider myself a woman. It's my choice to break from my culture that way.
8. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind Chiwetel Ejiofor, 2019
A 13-year-old boy is thrown out of the school he loves when his family can no longer afford the fees. He sneaks into the library and learns how to build a windmill to save his village from hunger. Image not having water and taking a nice shower and eating little food every day. This boy stands up to find a way to get his family water and wants to go to school to learn things. This shows that not everyone was born in a rich house. Some people have to work much harder to achieve things they want and even need. People who don't have money can take inspiration to work hard for what they want from this movie. People who do have money and watch this movie can appreciate that not everyone has those advantages. They can learn the value of not spoiling their children. Wealthy people can also learn to be grateful for what they have because not everyone had wealth.
9. The Blind Side John Lee Hancock, 2009
Not everyone has a parent on their side. Many people leave their kids or can't support them, so a lot of kids become orphans. This black teenager has drifted in and out of the school system for years, but someone adopts him transforming both his life and theirs on his way to the NFL. People should watch this to appreciate that some people have struggles that are beyond their control. Also, if those people get the support they need they can achieve things they never thought they could.
10. Bird Box Susanne Bier, 2018
People should see this movie as a representative of the horror genre. Beyond just being scary or creepy, this movie makes you think about how it feels to be blind. We can appreciate the scares, but also the survival elements of the movie while empathizing with people who go every day unable to see.
