Though our book club has evolved over time, our structure has remained the same. Our monthly 90-minute meetings begin with discussion of the selected book, led by the host mother and daughter. Eating food connected with the book follows the discussion and then we participate in a book-centered activity, game, or craft.
We try to read books from a variety of authors, time periods, genres, topics, and perspectives. We get input on books from the mothers and the daughters and then create a schedule for the year. We encourage our members to purchase the books from our local bookstore (who offers a 20% discount to us).
We take turn hosting our meetings and most often get together in people's homes. At times we meet in a book-specific location.
Because three of us are English/Education professors, we've explored various ways for our scholarly lives to overlap with our book clubs experiences. Below are articles and conference presentations that have come out of our book club experiences.
An article we published in Voice in the Middle, a journal that offers middle level teachers innovative and practical ideas for classroom use that are rooted in current research; a journal for teachers, by teachers - May 2017
A blog post about Book Clubs on the Writers Who Care blog - March 2015
A presentation at the Michigan Reading Association's annual conference in Grand Rapids, MI in March 2017
A National Council of Teachers of English annual conference presentation (with 5 of the daughters!) in St. Louis, MO - November 2017
