Before school budgets had a 2% cap, the school budget was voted down by taxpayers since 2003.
As a result, the Town Council would determine the school’s budget, resulting in more cuts.
When the state moved to a 2% tax cap, the school board kept the budget flat at 0% for years.
In 2017, the state created a funding formula that decreased Hopatcong’s state aid by 90% even though enrollment declined by 30%.
To minimally impact the classroom, administrators were cut. The district had 16 administrators in 2015; we now have 7 admin.
Lowest admin-to-staff ratio among the 20 school districts in Sussex County. The average ratio is 1:25. In Hopatcong, there is fewer than one administrator per 36 staff members.
