McWane Summer Volunteers
The Summer program (June 1st – August 31st) provides an opportunity for students to serve their community while showcasing their passion for STEM subjects. Our volunteers lead hands-on science demonstrations, assist in Camp McWane classes, and interpret exhibits throughout the museum. They play a vital role in fulfilling our mission of sparking wonder and curiosity about our world. Volunteers gain valuable leadership abilities in a dynamic learning environment, honing public speaking skills while developing a strong work ethic.
Students completing 6th or 7th grade will apply as Junior Teen Volunteers, and current 8th through 12th graders will apply as Teen Volunteers. Both applications can be found here: www.mcwane.org/volunteer. To be considered, candidates must submit an online application with an attached resume, a professional or educational letter of recommendation, and a character reference letter. The deadline to apply is March 31st, 2026, and interviews will occur during the month of April. For more details, please refer to the website.
A Unique Opportunity for Alabama Students – ASHS Informational Meetings
The Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences (ASHS) is opening in Fall 2026, and we are excited to share this opportunity with you and your rising 9th graders. ASHS will be the state’s first residential public high school dedicated exclusively to healthcare sciences, offering an experience that blends rigorous academics, hands-on learning, and leadership development in a supportive, residential environment.
Students at ASHS will take the state’s required core classes while also exploring specialized courses in healthcare fields such as nursing, biomedical sciences, healthcare administration, and healthcare related fields. Beyond the classroom, they will gain real-world experience through partnerships with hospitals and community organizations, helping them develop the knowledge, skills, and compassion needed to succeed in healthcare careers. Housing and tuition are fully covered for all students, and this is modeled after the other three residential high schools in Alabama.
The first class of students will begin in Fall 2026 on a temporary “mini-campus” hosted at the University of West Alabama in Livingston, before moving to the permanent campus in Demopolis. Applications for the inaugural 9th grade class will open on October 1, 2025.
We encourage you to share this information with interested students and families. If you would like additional materials or details, please reach out to the ASHS admissions team at admissions@alhealthcarehs.org or visit our website https://www.alhealthcarehs.org.
