“Seize the day!” This iconic line is from the Broadway Musical: Newsies. It means that one should take advantage of the present while it is still there and not to wait. The most recently performed musical in Homer High School, Newsies, presented three wonderful live performances on March fourth and fifth. With a repertoire of songs like “Santa Fe”, “That’s Rich,” and “Seize the Day,” the audience was entertained throughout the show while the performers ran, danced, sang and belted out songs.
After debuting on Broadway almost ten years ago, everyone who was a part of this musical was able to retain its joyousness through its powerful and inspirational ending. This musical was inspired by the Newsboys’ Strike of 1899 and themed around social justice, child labor, and acting against the establishment. It portrays an ignominious and endearing description of the consequences of failure to ensure social justice for working children.
As I looked around, the emotions of the characters on stage reflected back onto the audience. They were completely captivated by the visuals and sounds accompanied with seamless set changes, as well as a superb pit band which also consisted of Homer’s students. Cast members of this show have stated their roles as dreams come true filled with unforgettable memories. After over a year of abiding by Covid-19 restrictions at the Homer High School, director of the Newsies musical, Mrs. Cara Mclaughlin as well as band director Mr. David Digenero, and Homer High School students performed a spectacular version of this wonderful musical. "So here's how it is: if we don't act together then we are nothing. If we don't stick together we are nothing. And if we can't even trust each other, then we are nothing.”
