“Leaves”
By Valerie Mayo
Trees.
What do they have to hide?
What is it that they cover with their leaves?
Is it the marauding birds?
The gossiping monkeys?
So special is the springtime
That there are secrets
That the trees do not share
With humankind.
In the winter,
They are bare.
Fall, they begin to reveal themselves to the world.
But they cover and disguise
What is to be found
Within their leaves
In the summer.
The flowers are but a mask-
Distracting the soul
From feeling what can be felt
When one only remembers
That there is a world behind the veil
Of the forest leaves.
“Cartoon Foods”
By Valerie Mayo
Did you know that the cartoon foods of our
Dreams are just out of reach by us? They just
Are. Did you know that? Also, did you know
That every food from a cartoon show
Will taste different to everyone that
Tries it? Did you know? Really? Well that’s just
Fantastic. Right? Just Great. Simply splendid.
They are wonderful inventions, cartoons.
They allow for a person to feel as
Though they are in a different place. Like
How each cartoon creates a universe
All its own. With creatures all its own, too.
There is no end to imagination-
So why must there be for cartoon foods?
“Hugs”
By Valerie Mayo
One can only imagine
How it feels to have a hug
From someone loved.
It feels like a dream
Creeping in to say “hello”
In its silky slithering speech.
Arms that wrap the mind tight.
A love that gets to see the light.
Hugs are emotion.
Believing in the life to come.
A way to say “thank-you”
To those who are cherished.
A hug can mean the world.
To give one is to receive one.
And truly it connects us all.
