Dress Code

Students at Homer High School face a decision each day when preparing for school: how to comply with the school dress code.

Every student at Homer is given a Student Handbook which outlines the dress code. In speaking with a number of students, the majority claim to have never read the handbook and some admit to ignoring the policies of the code.

Senior, Zachary Smith, said: “I think dress codes are ridiculous! We should be able to express who we are. I would not switch to school uniforms because they would be terrible and wouldn’t fix anything!”

While some argue the dress code restricts personal style and question what changes could be made, the code currently in place is clear. Mrs. Reed, Secretary, said: “the student handbook has all the guidelines laid out.”

Would a dress code that includes school uniforms provide benefits in terms of bullying? Would the cost of school uniforms be prohibitive? For now, those questions will remain as there are currently no expected changes to the dress code heading into next year.
