On January 26, sixteen Homer students competed in the Midstate Regional Tournament of the Science Olympiad. These students have prepped for months in order to prepare for the 23 different events that they completed in, and had great success at the competition.
These events varied from labs, to experiments, to written tests, but all tested the students’ knowledge of the material and their application of it to the world. In order to prepare, students used their ninth period meetings to assemble their products, quiz themselves on the materials, and ensure that they are adhering to the strict rules of competition.
This year, Homer enjoyed greater success than expected. Despite this only being their fourth year, Homer finished in 11 out of 38 teams. Last year, we had won only three awards, but this year we also won individual awards in 5 events. In Astronomy, Homer placed 8th; in the Duct Tape Challenge Homer placed 10th; in Dynamic Planets Homer placed 10th; in Geological Mapping Homer placed 10th; and in Protein Modeling Homer placed 6th- a personal record for our school.
Congratulations to all participants, and thanks to their advisor, Mrs. Krauss, for all of her hard work!
