On November 2, the Homer Trojans went to war… with one another. Senior and junior girls faced each other donning football jerseys, bandanas, and face paint, for the glorious title of Powderpuff Champion. One hour later, a champion was crowned: the juniors.
Although in the past years Powder Puff has not taken place, with the help of Mr. Nasiatka and Mr. Young, Homer was able to participate in this beloved tradition. The proceeds went to breast cancer and pediatric cancer research, and they were raised through donations and pledge cards. These pledge cards were hung up in the school, and those that bought the pledge cards could dedicate them towards a beloved one that fought cancer. The grade that raised more money earned seven points on the scoreboard at the beginning of the game. This year, the juniors were victorious and started the battle with the advantage.
Each of the teams practiced vigilantly in preparation for the game. With the help of coaches- junior and senior football players- the girls had plays and advice to guide them. Each team also had junior and senior boys posing as cheerleaders to encourage their players. The audience loved when they danced to the “YMCA” song during halftime.
Quickly, the juniors established their prowess with a lead in the first quarter. With two touchdowns, they ended the quarter 21-0. In the second quarter the senior girls retaliated, and they closed the score gap with two touchdowns. But as the game continued, it became painfully obvious that the juniors would be victorious. With an ending score of 49 to 35, the junior girls could brag about their victory.
However, none of this would be possible without the teachers who reffed the game and the senior boys who helped narrate the event. Both sides played competitively and fairly, and Homer raised money for cancer research.
