The start of the school isn’t just nerve-wracking for students, but teachers as well, especially for the few who are new to Homer High School. Our new ninth grade English teachers, Mrs. Bosch and Mrs. Schenck, seem to be enjoying it so far, so we decided to sit down and ask a few questions to get to know them better.
Mrs. Bosch has been teaching for eight years, and was a teacher at Mount Vernon in Alexandria, Virginia. She graduated from Cortland Junior-Senior High School (where her dad was also an English teacher) and later graduated from George Mason University in Virginia. When asked how she was enjoying Homer, she stated that the students and faculty have been very supportive and encouraging. “My first impression was not when I walked in or walked into my interview. It was what all my friends who live in Homer have said about the school and their experiences with the kids. So my first impression was extremely favorable. Everyone had really nice things to say about it.” As for Mrs. Bosch’s personal life, she loves yoga, downhill skiing, and of course, reading. One of the books she’s most looking forward to reading this school year is Fahrenheit 451. At home, Mrs. Bosch has two children and a golden retriever named Reuben.
On the other side of the interview, Mrs. Schenck has been teaching for twenty-three years, and came to Homer High School from OCM Boces. She graduated from Geneseo in Albany, New York. “The administration and the teachers create a positive atmosphere. It’s very comfortable. And also, when I come in here I feel like a good teacher. I can do anything. Even after teaching all these years, you walk into a new environment all the time.” Schenck says, seeming to enjoy the high school’s positive vibes. “In my stage of teaching, I still have a new environment and new things to learn and be a part of.” She currently lives in Dryden and enjoys spending time with her four grandchildren, getting together with friends, travelling, and reading. Mrs. Schenck is excited to read Sugar Changed the World, but one of her all-time favorites is To Kill a Mockingbird. She and Mrs. Bosch are interested in creating a literary club or possibly a creative writing club.
If you get the chance, stop in and visit our new teachers to give them a warm welcome!
