Homecoming has once again come and gone in a heartbeat. Homer students worked very hard the past few weeks in order to finish their banners. Student Government was in overdrive in ensuring that everything would be done on time. By the time the night was over, there was a twist in the Golden Helmet celebration, a surprise banner winner, and the crowing of a new King and Queen.
This year’s spirit week filled the halls of Homer High School with memes, twins, patriots and tourists. Many of the classes went all out, giving each other tough competition. The race was so close that the Golden Helmet was not presented as part of the festivities as the result of a recount. A possible tie-breaking spirit day may be needed in the near future.
The competition began with the release of the banner themes, which happened to be board games. The seniors and the sophomores set to work immediately on their banners, knowing full well that it would be a challenge to get them done in two weeks. The juniors and freshmen, on the other hand, decided to wait until the week of homecoming to start their banners. No matter the amount of time required to make it, every banner was creative and gave a fun twist to games such as Clue, Sorry, Guess Who, and Candyland.
During halftime, the classes showed their school spirit by marching with their banners on the football field, anxiously waiting to hear who won the contest. In a drastic turn of events, it was the freshmen who stole the top spot because of their take on Candyland.
The crowning ceremony for the court followed the announcement. Presenting the crowns this year were Teddy Mercer and Caroline Riley, due to the fact that their siblings, last year's recipients, could not be in attendance. The girls on the court consisted of Nina Armedio, Julia Gustafson, Chloe Whittington, Deede Partigianoni, Allie Wakula and Tessa Yonta. They were paired respectively with Grant Stokoe, Alex Cottrell (with both Gustafson and Whittington as his partners) Joey Tummino, Tucker O’Donnell, and Dante Yacavone. In the end, O’Donnell and Gustafson took home the crowns.
The Homer Trojans took home the victory against the Chittenango Bears, the perfect way to end the festivities until next year.
