Every year, the International Club hosts one of the most anticipated dances of the season, the Fall Ball. The costume-themed dance is extremely popular among both students and teachers due to the its ability to let everyone show off their creativity through their costumes.
This year, there was the unfortunate coincidence that both the Fall Ball, the Homer football game, and the volleyball sectional match occurred on the same night. As a result, many Homer students opted to support their teams in Marcellus and Chittenango, and the dance was not as crowded as it usually is. Also, our trusted DJ, Philly C, could not come to the dance. Although the replacement was good, nobody can top DJ Philly C. Many of the songs were from a Halloween genre and though everyone enjoyed the festive spirit many of these songs did not have the needed beats to get students moving. This was a disappointment to many of the students who wanted to get loose and dance until they could not move anymore. To make the matter worse, the entire gym was open, in comparison to something like the homecoming dance where students in charge put down the partition. This made the lack of students at the dance all the more apparent as only about a fourth of the gym was being danced upon.
The upside to those who did come was, of course, more prizes! There was an array of games and awards given out, with the top prize of $50! $50! This grand prize went to Samantha Button and Julia Day who wore matching mime outfits. Runners-up to this prize were Tessa Yonta and Nina Amedio as cavewomen, Julian Ponirakis as Conor McGregor, the group of sophomore girls who went as the Queens of Wonderland, and many other great costumes. I pity the Judges who had to make the difficult decisions for prizes because all of the costumes were so creative and fun this year. Ellis Han, Elise Butts, and Madi Cole went as Dwight Schrute, Jim Halpert, and Pam Beesly from The Office which was a favorite of many attendees.
Fall Ball is one of the most creative dances that is hosted throughout the year, and everyone who was able to make it this year would agree that they had a fun time at the dance. It was an unfortunate coincidence that Fall Ball ended up being on a day when there was so many sporting events going on, and therefore did not receive the recognition it deserved. With even just a few more people the dance would have gone from great to spectacular in a matter of minutes. All there is to do now is remember the memories from this year and start planning a costume for the next Fall Ball.
