On Friday April 6, Student Government hosted the annual Casino Night. As usual, the highlight of the event was the true “casino atmosphere.” As partygoers entered the school, Student Government members checked them in and handed them a poker chip for a free drink of their choosing. Students entered the lobby through a fantastic gold, red, and black balloon arch, and were immediately struck by the fantastic decorations. Glittering streamers hung from the ceiling, and the walls were covered with stars and balloons. Four massive cardboard die greeted the students entering the gym.
The gym lent itself perfectly to the event. Tables, each lit with a small lamp, were positioned around the edges of the gym. Students could play “Go-Fish,” “Blackjack,” “Spoons,” “Uno,” and and other card games in the hopes of winning tickets that they could then use to win prizes. In the center of the gym, dancers jumped and hopped in clusters. DJ Philly C, once again, was a huge hit. His lights and music added to the “Casino Night vibe.” One attendee remarked, “This is honestly the third year in a row that I’ve lost my voice at Casino Night. I think it’s probably from screaming too loud during “Sweet Caroline.””
Numerous students have also expressed their delight that Mr. Massenzio was hired to take pictures for the dance. A favorite were the candids he took of the students dancing, laughing, and playing games. Mr. Massenzio also brought with him a backdrop so that the students could take posed pictures. The photography was such a big hit that many upperclassmen have asked Student Council if they could hire Mr. Massenzio to take pictures at prom. Jaclyn Deline, a junior, said, “The pictures turned out so great. I really hope that he can take pictures for us at prom. The quality would be a lot better than photos using the flash on an iPhone.”
Casino Night has made its mark in Homer High School tradition. As it has become so popular, the event is eagerly anticipated weeks in advanced. The student population has fallen in love with the event, and the expectation always lives up to its reality!
