Kia ora whānau,
This year, we will be using both iDeaL and Little Learners Love Literacy® (LLLL) in our classroom, with a stronger focus on IDeaL for teaching spelling.
What is iDeaL?
iDeaL is an explicit and systematic approach that helps children build strong foundational skills in reading and spelling. It emphasizes phonemic awareness, decoding, and irregular word recognition to support confident literacy development.
We also incorporate Little Learners Love Literacy® (LLLL), a structured program designed to teach the 44 sounds of the English language through a carefully sequenced approach. This includes engaging multisensory activities to help children understand how sounds and letters work together.
To support your child, please help them practice and revisit their spelling and reading at home. Regular practice makes a big difference!
I, my, the, to, we, he, she, was.
For Practice at home, children can be asked to read books. they can be encouraged to find letters/words (Lower case and capital case, both) which they have learnt in classroom every week. They are expected to know the sound associated with each letter. They can also be encouraged to read the book and blend other sounds together. While reading they are expected to make use of their index finger to track the letters and words.
