Thanatos, in ancient Greek religon and mytholgy, the personification of death.Thanatos was the son of Nyx the goddess of night, and the brother of Hypnos, the god of sleep.He appeared to humans to carry them to the underworld when the time alloted to them by the Fates had expired.Thanatos was once defeated by the warrior Heracles, who wrestled him to save the life of Alcestis, the wife of Admetus, and was tricked by Sisyphus, the king of Corinth, who wanted a second chance at life.Erebos is Thanatos' farther and Thanatos' other sibilings are Geras the goddess of old age, Oizys the god of suffering, Moros the god of doom, Apate the goddess of deception, Momus the god of blame, Eris the goddess of strife, Nemesis the goddess of Retrebution, Atropos the goddess of death and many more.Thanatos is depicted dressed in black and carring a sword.Thanatos was rarely in art without his twin brother Hypnos.
