Field Placement Process
Field Placement Process for Practicum and Student Teaching
Student is accepted to the school of education.
Student has completed the prerequisite courses.
Student has updated clearances in American Data Bank.
Student fills out the appropriate application for Practicum or Student Teaching.
Summer Practicum Applications due the end of December before the summer session.
Example: I will be doing Practicum in Summer 2024. I will fill out the application in December 2023.
Fall Practicum and Student Teaching Applications due the end of January for the following year.
Example: I will be student teaching in Fall 2024. I will fill out the application in January 2024.
Spring Practicum and Student Teaching Applications due the end of February for the following year.
I will be student teaching in Spring 2025. I will fill out the application in February 2024.
Applications are processed by the Field Placement Office.
Late applications are processed last and can effect placements.
Field Placement Office sends out requests to Partner Schools to see how many students they can host.
Requests for Summer go out in February for the following Summer.
Requests for Fall go out in April for the following Fall Semester.
Requests for Spring go out in September for the following Spring Semester.
Field Placement Office matches students to Partner schools.
Special circumstances are taken into consideration, given that the student completed the application on time.
Although special circumstances are considered, the Field Placement Office can not guarantee a placement that meets those needs. All placements depend on availability in the local schools.
Field Placement Office confirms Placements with Partner Schools.
Field Placement Office notifies students of their placement letter by email.
Students receive the name of the school, grade level, cooperating teacher, principal, and supervisor.
The cooperating teacher, principal and supervisor will be copied on this email.
Summer: Notified by the end of April.
Fall: Notified by the end of June.
Spring: Notified by the middle of November.
Students reach out to the cooperating teacher and principal by email to thank them for hosting, introduce themselves and begin to discuss logistics of the specific school.
Ask about the classroom setting, school day, arrival time, parking and setting up a meeting with your cooperating teacher.
Supervisors will reach out to students at the latest one week prior to set up an initial meeting. This may be conducted on campus or Zoom. All students must attend these meetings with their supervisors.
The Field Placement Office will hold Orientation for Practicum Students and Student Teachers. All students are required to attend training.
Students follow up with their cooperating teacher about logistics for their first day by email.
Students begin their first day in the field.
