What is instagram?

Instagram is an app where you can socialise with lots of other users/people. The age rating for Instagram is 13+. If your child is under 13, make sure you know if they download it or not. If they do download it without your permission then talk to them about it and ask them to uninstall the app.

Instagram also has a messaging function where people can directly talk to your child.

Private and public accounts

On Instagram, your child can have a private or public account. If they have a private account then only their approved followers can see the pictures and videos your child is uploading. If you account is public, anyone can look at your posts and message you. 

Instagram followers

On Instagram, you have followers and people who can like your posts. You can make an account and follow other users. You can also like and share other peoples posts.

Top tips for parents

Make sure you turn off having a public account in the Instagram settings. 

Why you should always have a private account: if it is public, anyone can send you messages and reply to your stories. You may not know who they are as they could have a fake profile.
