The College of the Holy Cross partners with CET to offer programs in mainland China and Taiwan. CET has been developing and operating innovative educational programs abroad since 1982. Originally “China Educational Tours,” CET began operations in Beijing and later expanded to other locations around the world. They offer language immersion programs in Beijing, Shanghai, and Taipei. These programs involve intensive language training in Mandarin, and depending on the program, there are opportunities to pursue an internship and take English-taught electives related to East Asian Studies. You do not need a high level of proficiency in Mandarin, as three semesters (CHIN 201) is sufficient to attend our longest-standing program in Beijing.
You'll not only make tremendous progress in your language learning, but spending time in mainland China or Taiwan as a student gives you the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in Chinese culture. You could visit a Shaolin Temple in Henan province and learn about Chan Buddhism and its famous martial arts tradition. Or you could spend an evening watching Kunqu, a traditional Chinese opera. Given the vast influence of Chinese culture abroad, future employers will undoubtedly view your study abroad experience as an asset.
CET programs follow a similar academic calendar to Holy Cross. CET Beijing, Shanghai, and Taipei are designed as single-semester programs, but you can study abroad for a year in mainland China by spending the fall of your junior year in Beijing and then the spring semester in Shanghai.
Some program dates are listed below:
Beijing Fall:
