The Department of Visual Arts at Holy Cross and the Cantor Art Gallery are honored to present Metanoia, an exhibition of the work of studio art majors from the College of the Holy Cross.

Throughout their senior year, the students have participated in a concentration seminar, a rigorous capstone experience in which they developed their artistic practice through independent work and experimentation. During this time, students worked closely with studio faculty to find their individual voice, and to develop a cohesive body of work. The students have selected the pieces most representative of this process; they have also collaborated with faculty and Cantor Gallery staff to conceptualize and design the display. Due to the events of this past year, the project has been met with unique challenges, many of which are addressed in the themes explored by the works of art.

As a reflection of this complex time, the students have chosen the title Metanoia—an ancient Greek term translated as after-thought, connoting a change of mind, often connected to regret or repentance. The modern psychologist Carl Jung developed the term to define the productive rebuilding following a traumatic life-altering experience. The sorrow, reflection, desire, and hope encompassed within this term provides a small window into the challenges this cohort has faced this year. This year's exhibiting artists include: Isabel Dawson, Elizabeth Larkin, Kiera MacAneney, Yekaterina Martin, Grace Peluso, Fernando Torralba, José Tenorio Villagomez, Jasmine Williams, Simeon Lloyd Wingard.

We invite you to spend some time with the work of these nine artists, who have admirably navigated the changing landscape of a global pandemic while remaining connected to their practice and maintaining the integrity of their work. This exhibition is a testament not only to each student’s hard work and perseverance, but also to their thoughtful consideration of their unique realities. We offer them our congratulations and deepest respect, and wish them continued success as they pursue their artistic careers.
