To begin the process, two teams created concepts and these two ideas were combined in the finished idea of the mural. Going forward, we brainstormed the use of colors and the method in which we would overlay the off-color pattern on the main layer of the mural.
Sketching the image of the mural involved taking advantage of the possibilities of a digital drawing program to create an outline. Since the first sketch of the outline was completely digital, we were able project the image onto our canvas to ensure that the first pencil drawing was accurate.
The application of paint was done after the sketching of the border lines. The class began with the painting of the states and the ocean, making sure to identify the shades of colors that were being used for each state. Once these were completed, the painting of the border lines as well as the Fenwick building began, which really brought the whole image to a distinct focus. Once this was completed, each member of the class began working on his/her own butterfly to represent themselves. The butterflies were painted alongside the rough pattern which was applied through paint rollers which had been modified by the students. Allowing us to create an image with several layers including the states, butterflies, and pattern.
