Jordan issues visas to U.S. citizens and many other nationalities for a fee at Queen Alia International Airport, and coming from Israel, at the Sheikh Hussain crossing in the north of the country (not at the Alenby/King Hussein Bridge or Wadi Araba/South Border crossings!) upon arrival.
The visa currently costs 40JD (about $60 USD) for a single entry upon arrival at the airport.
Single-semester students may also obtain a five-year (US citizens only) or six-month (EU and others), multi-entry visa from the consulate in Washington D.C. or the consular office nearest you before you travel to Jordan. You can find the e-visa application forms here. The multi-entry visa can be a good choice if you are planning to leave Jordan more than twice during the semester; otherwise, you are better off with a cheaper, single-entry visa which you can get at the airport. The six-month, multi-entry visa costs approximately $187 and the five-year visa costs $170 (as of October 2023). (Traveling to Palestine and Israel, overland, does not require purchasing a visa on re-entry, so should not be counted in your “travel”.)
Academic-year students should simply purchase the single-entry visa at the airport on arrival, for 40 JD (about $60 USD), which you will then convert to a residency permit for one year through the University of Jordan. Our on-site staff will assist in the process of securing your iqama (residency permit), which includes visiting a health clinic for a blood test at a cost of 85 JD (price may change). Once you have your residency permit, you will be able to exit and reenter the country without obtaining a new visa. It is hard to predict, however, how long this process will take.
Citizens of other countries should ask the Jordanian Embassy in the U.S. or their home country for help in determining their requirements. Citizens of some countries, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, and India, should be aware that you might have to apply for a visa before going to Jordan and that the visa and residency processes may take several months.
