Siena is a vibrant Tuscan city-on-a-hill whose medieval center looks and feels like a village but whose larger metropolis reflects the modernity and cultural sophistication of its native residents, robust student population, and increasingly diverse community. One thing brings people to Siena and keeps them here: the city's unique architectural beauty, civic character, and proud traditions.
The Siena Art Institute (SART) plays an important role in enhancing that modern civic character, as do Holy Cross students who study and perfect their artistic practice there. VAST majors/minors who participate in the SART study abroad program will find their creative ideas and art-making skills soaring on account of the rich visual stimuli, distinctive Tuscan light, strong one-on-one artistic mentorship and advising, and dedicated studio space that is theirs for the semester, whether fall or spring. Each student will produce a body of new work and gain the proto-professional opportunity of exhibiting their art publicly at semester's end alongside an artist's statement. Meanwhile, HC students pursuing a minor in Museum Studies can take full advantage of SART's strong courses and experiential opportunities related to this essential field related to the world of art.
Although Holy Cross students will grow to love this historic city as home, Siena is exceedingly well connected by bus and train to Florence (1 hr), from which point Italy - and Europe - beckon. Although it may prove difficult to tear yourself away from the Tuscan countryside...
See their art.
Hear their perspectives.

A vibrant, youthful, tradition-rich city of about 55,000, Siena is also safe, beautiful, and centrally located. From the world-renowned elliptical main square "Il Campo" to the striped columns of il Duomo (cathedral), plus the numerous outdoor cafes and neighborhood feste (festivals), Siena appeals to all the senses and all sensibilities. Thanks to its location and convenient bus/train connections, Siena can serve as a launching pad - most notably to Florence (lower left) and its wealth of historic sites and world-class art; the eternal city of Rome, where all roads still lead; Venice in all its glory; and scores of other, stunning Italian towns and coastal locales that offer their own unique histories, cuisines, traditions, and panoramas.
