Dunedin is a charming city on the southeast coast of New Zealand's South Island. Its unique vibe comes partly from its much celebrated Scottish heritage - reflected most immediately by stunning Victorian and Edwardian architecture - and partly from its laid-back atmosphere. The latter is due in no small part to Dunedin's student population! Together, these characteristics make this small city a perfect place for wandering its beautiful streets and parks and taking in all there is to see and do.
Holy Cross students will experience Dunedin through Otago University, New Zealand's oldest undergraduate institution. Otago's student body numbers around 21,000 and pulls greatly (to the tune of 85%!) from outside Dunedin. Over 100 countries, in fact, are represented. Holy Cross partners with Arcadia Abroad, an American university which over the years has built a host of first-class programs across the world, to support its students who choose Otago as their host university abroad.
After you are approved to study abroad by our (HC's) office, you will be invited to open an account in Arcadia's student portal. Doing so marks the beginning of your administrative journey which ultimately leads to matriculation at Otago - including enrolling in courses, applying for housing, and receiving the all-important Confirmation of Enrollment (COE) letter from Otago which starts the student visa process rolling. Arcadia staff are exceptionally well versed in the ins-and-outs of this administration and will help you navigate the many steps prior to boarding your flight to Auckland, where Arcadia holds a 3-4 day Orientation period designed to help you acclimate, form friendships, learn your way around, and get over your jet lag. From that point onward, Otago and Dunedin await.
Two more ways to get acquainted...
Fall 2025 ("Semester 2")
Fri, June 27 - Sun, Nov 9
Spring 2026 ("Semester 1")
Mon, Feb 23 - Sun, June 21
All study abroad students must plan to stay until the end of the exam period. They cannot arrange to take exams at a time other than the one assigned for the class. See HC Study Abroad's Student Contract for this policy.
From your 'home' airport in the States, you will purchase a flight to Auckland, NZ, where Arcadia staff will meet you at the airport, and begin 3-4 days of orientation. On the last day of orientation, Arcadia staff will escort you to the city of Dunedin and help you get settled into your new home and school.
Dunedin offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural offerings. The city itself overlooks on the Blanket and Andersons Bays, but if you wander out onto the Otago Peninsula, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking coastal views and rugged cliffs - plus wildlife sightings of albatrosses, penguins, even sea lions. The iconic Larnach Castle, perched on a hill, offers both history and stunning gardens.
Within the city proper, you won't want to miss Dunedin's storybook-charming railway station, nor the Otago Museum, which showcases both natural history and fascinating local culture. Part of that culture is fed by a dynamic arts scene, and rests on vibrant public spaces, including historic buildings, locally-sourced restaurants, shops, cafés, nearby beaches and hiking trails, and the university.
As for how to get around, Dunedin is quite walkable, especially in the city center. The hilly terrain might be a workout, but it’s a great way to explore. There are also bike lanes and plenty of spots to rent bikes if you want to pedal around. The main form of public transport is the bus network, operated by Go Bus and covering the city and suburbs. Buses are generally reliable and can get you to key spots in the city center and beyond.
