Melbourne is one of Australia's dynamic, international, artsy and sports-mad coastal cities. It boasts wonderful food and fashion scenes along with demonstrable community interest in green living, with related volunteer opportunities abounding. Students who study here will become part of a vibrant - and large! - community of university students from all corners of the globe counting about 50,000 in number. Although Australia is predominantly English-speaking, Holy Cross students should expect to encounter cultures vastly different from American culture, and an internationalized student body reflecting geographic proximity to Asia.
To offer this program of study, Holy Cross partners with Arcadia Abroad, which for many years has built and currently manages a series of strong study abroad opportunities across the globe and in Australia, including one at the University of Melbourne. Once you are approved by Holy Cross to study abroad, you will be invited to open an account in Arcadia's student portal. Doing so marks the beginning of your administrative journey to enrolling in courses at Melbourne, choosing and applying for housing, applying for an Australian student visa, and receiving the all-important Confirmation Letter from the University of Melbourne which starts the via process rolling. Arcadia staff are extremely well versed in the ins-and-outs and will help you navigate these many steps prior to boarding your flight to Sydney, where Arcadia holds a 3-4 day Orientation period designed to help you acclimate, form friendships, learn your way around, and get over your jet lag. From that point onward, and with Arcadia staff leading the way, Melbourne awaits.

Spring 2026 (UMELB's "Semester 1")
mid-Feb (date TBA) - Sat, June 28
All study abroad students must plan to stay until the end of the exam period, as they cannot arrange to take exams at a time other than the one assigned for the class. See the Student Contract for the policy.
From your 'home' airport in the States, you will purchase a flight to Sydney, where Arcadia staff will meet you at the airport, and begin 3-4 days of orientation. On the last day of orientation, Arcadia staff will escort you back to the Sydney airport, where you fly to Melbourne. Again, Arcadia will meet you and get you settled to start your semester(s) abroad.
Melbourne, or "Narr-m" (its Aboriginal name), has a youthful, hip vibe. Its residents tend to be active, environmentally conscientious, and into food, art, and sports. There's a lot to love - and a lot to do outside! The key is dressing in layers each day, because a another truism of the city is its changeable weather. As in, super changeable.
As for the sights and sounds that will become familiar to you, there are too many to count. However, some of the most notable are the Melbourne Zoo, the city's "footy" stadiums and parks, the Shrine of Remembrance, and of course Queen Victoria Market. Good news! Melbourne's public transportation system is one of the best in Australia. SO, while you'll indeed be walking to and from your classes, any sites further afield are accessible via the city's busses, trains, and trams.
