These large-scale compositions were drawn by Schmidt on site, often in abandoned and developing industrial sites around Boston, including the Charlestown Navy Yard and the Four Point Channel. The focus required for large scale work is of particular interest to Schmidt, who works to fill the large sheets of paper over the course of one day. Each large, gestural composition utilizes the fluidity and immediacy of charcoal to explore the expressive qualities of the space and the machines that fill it.
