Learn Basic Latin!

In 2019-2020, Prof. Dominic Machado directed a group of Holy Cross students who designed and led an after-school program introducing the Latin language to students at City View Elementary School. In 2020-2021, the Holy Cross Classics Department launched a three-year project making working with elementary-school students in Worcester a central part of all sections of its introductory course sequence in Latin.

When Holy Cross and Worcester Public Schools shifted to remote learning, Holy Cross remained committed to this learning partnership. Holy Cross students worked in teams to develop short videos aimed at engaging fourth- to fifth-grade students in activities familiarizing them with Latin.

The complete collection of videos was the subject of panel discussions at Holy Cross' annual spring Academic Conference in April 2021. The videos included here are a selection that can be viewed independently, but taken together gradually introduce students to features of Latin that can provoke thought about how we use our own languages.
