The mission of the William R. Satz School Library is to encourage student and staff engagement through pursuit of their interests, both individually and collaboratively, by providing access to various types of media, resources, and perspectives, both within the school and beyond, so that patrons can address their learning needs and interests, be they curricular or personal, and share their knowledge and creations with an authentic audience. Library patrons will be encouraged to discuss their search processes and their findings, and to collaborate with the librarian and peers so that patrons can extend their knowledge of both what can be found and how it can be found. Patrons will be encouraged to consider that learning is a life-long process, and both staff and students will be encouraged to work collaboratively in the pursuit of knowledge.
As with all areas of education, school libraries and their librarians have educational standards. While the State of New Jersey does not currently specify school library standards, the American Association of School Librarians provides standards to guide the practice of school librarians as they engage with learners.
AASL Standards Framework for Learners are built around six Shared Foundations and Key Commitments and four Domains and Competencies.
