Characteristics of the Stages of Second Language Acquisition:

Pre-production (Silent Period)· Has minimal comprehension· Can be silent or simply repeat what you say· Will nod “yes” or “no”· Draws or points to show understanding
Early Production· Has limited comprehension· Can speak in 1 or 2 word phrases· May use short chunks of memorized language – familiar phrases or key words
Speech Emergence· Has good comprehension· Can say simple phrases and sentences with grammatical errors· Can ask simple questions· Will start conversations with friends· Can understand easy stories read to with supporting pictures· Can follow 2-step directions
Intermediate Fluency· Has excellent comprehension· Can speak with more complex sentences with a few grammatical errors· More willing to express thoughts and ideas· May ask more clarifying questions
Advanced Fluency· Near native speaking fluency, grammar and ability to do content area work
