Meet Your Teacher
Hello! I'm Ashley Mezzina, Your Gifted and Talented Guide at Village School
Educational Background
I am proud to bring over 18 years of teaching experience to Village School, primarily focusing on Gifted and Talented Education and Literacy. I began my educational journey at St. Joseph's College, earning my Bachelor's degree. Further expanding my expertise, I completed my Master's in Literacy from Adelphi University. Beyond my formal education, I hold a New York State certificate in Gifted and Talented Education and had the distinct honor of studying under Joseph Renzulli at the University of Connecticut. My career started in Brooklyn, New York, in 2004, where I gained invaluable experience teaching diverse learners within the New York City Department of Education.
Teaching Philosophy
Education, to me, is not just about imparting knowledge; it's about nurturing curiosity and empowering students to become lifelong learners. My teaching philosophy centers on the belief that children should have the freedom to explore new problems, ask questions, and discover answers. Rather than focusing on student deficits, my aim is to hone their strengths, encouraging each student to reach their highest potential.
Methodology and Achievements
I take great pride in employing logic and reasoning activities in my classroom to stimulate critical thinking. Differentiation is not just a method for me; it's an integral part of my teaching style. I enjoy engaging students by asking open-ended questions that foster deeper understanding and encourage lively discussion. My commitment to the field of Gifted and Talented Education has led me to participate in ConFratute, an extensive professional development program designed to improve the quality of teaching for gifted students.
Hobbies and Interests
When I'm not teaching, you can find me spending quality time with my husband, two sons and family dog. Last summer, my family and I made the move from Brooklyn, NY, to Manalapan, NJ, embracing a new chapter in our lives.
I'm thrilled to have you all as a part of this educational journey. Together, let's make this a year full of exploration, learning, and growth!
